Overview

It's only a 4-mile walk up and down the tree-covered symbol of Saint Lucia- that is, up a winding trail that climbs the steep, rain forest-covered slopes of a 2,619 foot volcanic mountain. Periodically, the trees give way to breathtaking vistas of the emerald-green island and the too-blue waters of the Caribbean. Guides are mandatory, but full of knowledge. The caves once used as shelters by freedom fighters of the Brigand war, brightly colored tropical birds and lush vegetation that includes giant gommiers (used to make canoes), the smaller swizzlestick tree ( used to make swizzle sticks) and "peeling tourists" - trees with flaky brown bark that looks painfully familiar to anyone who's fallen asleep on the beach without sunblock.

Gros Piton Hike
James_M, 09-09-2022
We stayed in the north of the island and Danny Boy picked us up exactly when he said he would (6am). On the way down to the Pitons he gave us a brilliant insight in to the history of St Lucia that was full of banter and genuine interest - think of the journey to and from the hike as a 4hr+ cultural excursion with a drive through banana plantations, Castries, fishing villages etc.

The hike is short (4.1 miles) and steep (c. 2000ft) and will take most between 3 and 4 hrs. You meet a guide at the bottom, pay the entry fee (50USD pp, they take card) and set off through the little village to go as far as you wish up the trail - most decide not to go to the top apparently. The trail has four waypoints that broadly correspond with quarters. The first two legs are easier (but not easy) with the second two a little harder. It’s almost completely in the shade but take 1.5l of water pp - it’s humid. Trainers are fine. The top is a rocky outcrop with beautiful views out over the island and over to Mt Gimie. The hike back down is the same route in reverse. Danny Boy meets you at the bottom with a Piton beer or two for the journey back.

In short, Danny Boy adds a huge amount of value to what could have been a long, silent journey. This is a private hire to and from the hike but included a tour of the island and gave you some history and local insight. We would definitely look Danny Boy up on our next trip and wish him all the best until then.
Good Vibes Only

When we first met Danny Boy we knew this is going to be a good excursion. He was really accommodating and very friendly. On the drive over to the Gros Piton, class was in session. Danny Boy told us all about St. Lucia history and culture. Be warned, he will quiz you when he’s taking you back to your hotel. Danny Boy is a true local’s local.

The tour guides on the hike were very friendly. The hike itself was very strenuous. Trekking poles are very helpful as well as hiking boots or sturdy sneakers. All the sweat is worth the spectacular views.

After the hike we went to the sulfur baths. Again, Danny Boy was on point recommending the various pools temperatures, and snapping photos for us so we would never forget the experience. Don’t forget to bring a towel if you opt for the sulfur baths.

Good vibes only from Danny Boy. We highly recommend this tour if you’re planning on visiting St. Lucia.

Danny Boy, the driving encyclopedia! Also, the views and the guides were great. The hike is hard and rocky, but it is a nice adventure.
It’s the people like Danny boy that make the difference

Danny boy was on time picking us up from our resort. It’s always nice to have a friendly, knowledgeable driver. We learned so much about St Lucia thanks to Danny boy. He handed us off to our guide (Terika) for our hike up the Gros Pitan. Terika always made sure we were heading in the right direction. We couldn’t have done it without her.

Danny boy also took us to the mud bath’s for some much needed relaxation after our hike.

The entire experience was perfect. We had a tremendous sense of accomplishment and enjoyed the entire day because of Danny boy and Terika.

And when you take a ride with Danny boy ask him about his PHD.
